American Kestrel pegasus by Woosie American Kestrel pegasus by Woosie
This is a custom My Little Pony that I made for CuddlyParrot. She won a raffle at a My Little Pony collectors convention for a commissioned pony of her choice from me. She loves birds and wanted a pegasus that was designed aroun the American kestrel. This is what we came up with together. The wings are hand sculpted from Apoxie Clay. Hair is nylon from Dollyhair. The eyes, little black spots on the body and the wings were all painted with acrylics and sealed.

I used to work at a wildlife rehab center and we occasionally rehabed raptors including Kestrels so I've had a chance to view them close-up. I have to say, you've really, REALLY done a great job capturing their essence in this custom. I love that she has a far off look, wise in her eye. So kestrel.

This one is BEAUTIFUL!!! I love those birds! You did a great job with this one!
smottedhorses Featured By Owner Oct 30, 2009
This is so beautiful! I've always loved birds of prey and this is an awesome adaptation! Your dry brushing is so much better than mine xD Practice makes perfect!

Not asking exactly how you make the wings of course, but what do you do for an armature for them? I've tried armature wire for the front and then using wire mesh, but it never seems to hold up when I add anything :(

I make a wire frame that's wing shaped from thick galvanized steel wire, then cover it in a thin layer of Apoxie Clay, kinda like a bat wing, then cover that with the feathers individually after the frame is hardened.

Wow, this is gorgeous! I always wanted the pegas to have bigger wings.

Hi Woosie! Haven't commented in a while. This is gorgeous how did you do such incredible wings?? The details are amazing too!
So lovely to look at!

I love how you hinted at how a Kestrals eyes look with the eye lids being that yellow, the same with the beak and legs. I know what a Kestral looks like in its usual form, lol, and your way of portraying it on your pegasus is creative and still beautiful.

He just arrived and has taken a dominant space ruling over all my customs collection. Thank you!

lol, awesome. I love how he is a "he" to you as well, I had thought of him as very masculine when making him.

This is my favorite so far! It's really beautiful and amazing
Frigandier Featured By Owner Aug 19, 2009  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
That's incredible! Every detail is so clean and perfect, you've outdone yourself on this one. I'm flabbergasted at how much detail you managed on this one, both in sculpture and paint. Were the gradiated blues and yellows on the nose and feet done with some sort of airbrush?
Woosie Featured By Owner Aug 19, 2009  Professional Artisan Crafter
The blue grey and yellow on the nose and feet were done with acrylics and paintbrush using a dry brush technique.
Frigandier Featured By Owner Aug 20, 2009  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Ah, I see! It's extremely clean, and you've layered it very well. :)

Absolutely amazing!

On an unrelated but kind of ironic note - a character named Kestrel appeared in this webcomic: [link] and said she'd someday like to custom paint My Little Ponies for people. When I saw the title for this one, I actually thought for a moment it was inspired by her! Clearly it's not, but it is beautiful.

You have gone far too long without a new pony to show off.
